Girl Poems wasn’t written with the idea in mind to teach lessons. I strove towards poems that captured moments in time-no matter how unseemly or salacious. The way you feel in a moment is distant from the way you think you should feel and this collection of poetry is the same. Some family members have held some criticisms towards the collection because of it’s lack of supposed uplift…they expected lessons to be taught and a clean-cut way of living to be expressed. But that’s never been me and I’ve always found authenticity uplifting in and of itself, though I guess it depends on how far you align yourself with any less-than positive ideals. Sorry for my rant, just needed to let it out. Girl Poems wasn’t meant to teach lessons.
During the days in which I choose to conform, I do so with a specific feeling in mind that I want to achieve. A sort of climax that I aim to reach. A feeling effortlessly maintained between the ages of 6-9 and again between the ages of 13-15, when being a girl was simply one of the numerous ways of being.
